I recently had the pleasure of creating a custom portrait of Freckles. He is a charming Dalmatian from Tinwell, just outside Stamford in Lincolnshire. As a pet portrait artist based in the Midlands, I regularly take commissions from dog owners across the UK, and it’s always a joy to travel to new locations and meet the pets I will be painting in person.
Meeting Freckles in Stamford
Visiting Freckles in his Stamford home was an absolute delight. Dalmatians have such distinctive black and white coats, and each spot is unique, so seeing Freckles up close allowed me to capture his personality and markings accurately. Stamford itself, with its historic stone buildings and charming streets, provided a lovely backdrop for this commission.
The Painting Process
This Dalmatian portrait was created on Daler Rowney line‑and‑wash watercolour board. I used gouache. This technique allowed me to bring out the richness of his black spots against the pristine white fur. Capturing his playful expression and curious eyes was one of my favourite parts of the process. Once the painting was complete, it was bespoke framed in my Exton workshop, giving it a finished, gallery-quality look.

Alternatively, I can work from reference photographs if an in-person visit isn’t possible.
