I am sooo pleased to have the done in memory of him.
Carmela.
Jim has been with me since a puppy up until his passing of 16 years old.
He originated from Oakham.
We had been through good and bad times together.
He was my best friend with a beautiful personality.
He loved people especially children.
And always there for me
When I asked Penny to paint Jim.
I couldn’t have asked for anyone else.
When I saw the end result i was trying to hold in my emotions.
She had capture Jim exactly how he looked as if he was still alive.

Capturing Jim — A Springer Spaniel Portrait in Rutland
Carmela approached me about commissioning a portrait of Jim. He is her loyal Springer Spaniel and has been by her side for 16 years. I knew this was going to be a very special and emotionally meaningful piece. From Oakham to Market Overton, Jim’s story and character became the starting point for this painting.
Getting to know the subject
Before I put brush to paper, I gathered photographs of Jim. I also collected any stories the owner wanted to share. This helped me understand his personality — his gentle eyes, his love of people (especially children), and his long companionship with Carmela.
For Jim, I used watercolour board and applied a line and wash technique in gouache. The choice was intentional: it allows for a delicate yet clear rendering of a dog’s fur texture, facial expression and the quiet dignity of a much‑loved companion.
I began the painting process, working carefully to reflect Jim’s personality and ensure that his likeness was spot on. The portrait was finally complete. I then moved to the framing stage. I double‑mounted the artwork. For the frame, I selected an Italian black frame with a gold‑sight edging from our “188 Collection.” This choice beautifully complements the painting.
Finally, the piece was installed in Carmela’s sitting room, where it now hangs with pride.
