The evasive otter is difficult to track down and is one of the top predators in the UK. Otters have their cubs in underground burrows. These are known as holts. Otters are excellent swimmers and the cubs are in the rivers by ten weeks old. They have webbed feet and very dense fur to keep them warm. They are seen in wetlands, rivers and along the coast especially in Scotland, West Wales and East Anglia. Otters require clean waters with an abundance of food and plenty of vegetation that hides their secluded holts.
